MultiSpecies Intra-Action Art Exhibition

I will be showing my new work Urban Swarming in the Multispecies Intra-Action Art Exhibition curated by Madeleine Boyd and Dr. Eben Kerksey at MOP Gallery, Sydney this July: http://intraactionart.wordpress.com/ Urban Swarming includes my recent video: a space to cross, created from documentary footage of aggressive bee responses. Urban Swarming looks at the endangered status of the European honeybee through a comparative juxtaposition of the viewing experience played out against the hubbub of commuters in the rush-hour at busy urban locations. The video images of desperate, aggressive honeybee responses are viewed against the backdrop of the rushing mass of the urban population, scurrying hither and thither. Both humans and honeybees exhibit mindless – possibly doomed – behaviours. Briefly, this work will be set up with a QR Code link so that viewers can download it on their iPads or iPhones in strategic Sydney locations – it can also be accessed on my website for those not in Sydney. Viewer responses will be collected on the designated artwork website. More to follow nearer the install date!!

Transdisciplinary Imaging Conference 2012

The Second International Conference on Transdisciplinary Imaging at the Intersections between Art, Science & Culture will be taking place on the 22 – 23 June, 2012. The theme of the Conference is Interference Strategies for Art.

Creatures of the Future Garden

Just drawing your attention to an opening this week – for any of you in the Perth area I have a work: HOST, showing in this exhibition

CREATURES OF THE FUTURE GARDEN

A garden can be a place of contemplation, cultivation or control. In a world of increasing urbanisationand biotechnical advancement what will the future be? What roles will the creatures in it -human and non-human play?

Curated by Donna Frankllin, participating artists: Geoge Gessert, Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg, Angela Singer, Trish Adams, Svenja Kratz, Tarsh Bates, Donna Franklin, Kirsten Hudson, The Made Generation Collective, Gary & Suzie Cass, Jesse Brown, Nicholas Lozanovski & Sasha Whittle.

A space to cross

Just acouple of stills from my new video: a space to cross
The mood of this video is very different from my earlier bee video: HOST since it focuses on aggressive bee behaviours as metaphor for uncontained emotions…the original footage for this movie was collected during my artist residence with the Visual & Sensory Neuroscience group, Queensland Brain Institute.

ISEA 2012: Machine Wilderness

My video: “HOST” has been accepted to play at the Albuquerque Museum of Modern Art on September 19th as part of the ISEA 2012 “Machine Wilderness” programme.

i’m now working on the follow up movie: “a space to cross”  that includes footage of aggressive bee responses – see the stinger?

Just following up on my earlier post @ the new movie: A space to cross – it’s finished with a fantastic soundscape written by roundhouse 🙂

Extended Show Date

Cynthia Pannucci, Founder/Director of ASCI has just announced that the New York Hall of Science has requested extending the show: Digital2011: The Alchemy of Change til 4th March, 2012. This means  that my digital print: Changing Fates_004 can still be seen in the gallery as well as on-line: http://www.asci.org/index2.php?artikel=1168

Cynthia is currently looking for other venues that may want to host this exhibition later this year.

The image below shows digital videomicrograph stills of adult stem cells from my blood changing fates in the laboratory over 7 days to become beating cardiac cells:

Virtual Anatomies Symposium

I will be presenting my paper – Mediating Corporeality: RE_interpretations at the Art/Science Interface

at the “Virtual Anatomies” Symposium @ The University of Queensland next week

Full Symposium details: http://www.ched.uq.edu.au/index.html?page=159754&pid=40622

I will be discussing my early use of scientific imaging technologies and and the ways that I have re-interpreted scientific data from an artistic perspective. I will give examples from some of my artworks and art/science collaborative projects.

My video HOST will also be shown as a large-scale 3 channel outdoor projection at Parer Place, QUT CPI during the Symposium closing event, see the image still below (HOST installation photography: Svenja Kraz).

Changing Fates_004

My digital image: “Changing Fates_0004” has been selected to show in New York.

The image is to be included in the Art & Science Collaborations – DIGITAL2011: The Alchemy of Change   http://www.asci.org/

This will be ASCI’s 13th International Digital Print Competition/Exhibition, to be held at the New York Hall of Science, September 3, 2011 – February 5, 2012

Image Description: “Changing fates” is the term biomedical scientists use to describe the process of redirecting some adult pluripotent stem cells into becoming other types of cells. My “Changing Fates_004” digital print shows modified digital videomicrograph image data of adult stem cells extracted from my blood, changing into beating cardiac cells “in vitro” after seven days. These cellular changes occurred in response to the introduction, on the third day in culture, of my scientific collaborator’s proprietary chemical mix – a form of contemporary Alchemy that may have the potential to materially modify or reconstruct our bodies.

CONFERENCE+PRESENTATIONS

Testing New Ground

Testing New Ground: An Interdisciplinary Discussion on Hybrid Habitats

has been accepted for presentation at ISEA2011 Istanbul next September. Panel members in addition to myself are:

Panel Abstract

Unique synergies will emerge from this panel discussion on the habitat as theorists and artists speak to the ways in which their current research raises insights into contemporary modes of technologically mediated inhabitation.

With a focus on diverse sites that are both material/virtual, actual/imaginary, discussion will consider the issues at stake as we shift from imaging and thinking of the screen as a portal to other worlds or a mirror of those that we actually inhabit to alternative accountings of the hybrid and augmented experiences on offer. The mixed realities of new urban destinations, artworks that employ game engines and 3D platforms to make visible the conditions for alternate life and consciousness,  space stations that are no longer just artificial worlds actually occupied by astronauts but augmented realities inhabited potentially by all earth dwellers  – these are all sites that move beyond established understandings of the integration of screen and communications technologies with physical architecture in the form of the digital city or the virtual worlds that have been conjured up through digital networks to be embodied by the user as avatar. In contemporary culture, alternative forms of inhabitation, both imaginary and actual, embodied and sensorial, are being enacted that point to possible transfigurations of the screen as a habitat.

Disordered Swarming in TOXICITY, Winnipeg

Opening next week in Winnipeg is the TOXICITY exhibition curated by Dr Melentie Pandilovski: http://www.toxicitywinnipeg.com/exhibition/

I’m very please to say that my new video installation: Disordered Swarming will be showing as part of this event.

Disordered Swarmingis an extension of my previous work Urban Swarming, shown @ MOP gallery last June, however Disordered Swarming directs its focus specifically to the endangered status of the honeybee due to the toxic effects of Colony Collapse Disorder:
